Photographer Research - David Bailey

David Bailey

David Bailey is a well renowned British fashion and portrait photographer, capturing many celebrities and making commissions for musicians. Bailey isn't distinct for couple portraiture, but his method of portraiture is iconic and I feel would be a perfect inspiration for my style and personal project. Since he isn't distinct for couple photos, I have found portraits where he has captured two people together, to keep on track with my couple portraiture work.

This shot is of the artists Paul McCartney and John Lennon, members of the band The Beatles. The first thing that catches the eye about this photo is the positioning of the two men. Lennon being placed above McCartney, but he is more towered over him. Lennon's arms are rested on McCartney's shoulders, making his hands cover the body of McCartney; this leaving McCartney to appear smaller in size compared to Lennon. Furthermore, Lennon's head is rested on top of McCartney's head, this also having McCartney appearing smaller, but this also presents a relationship between the two men; the fact that the viewer can see they are both comfortable with this closeness will convey a history between the two men, whether the viewer knows who they are or not. Their expressions are calm but also could be perceived as intimidating due to the eye contact they make with the camera and the lack of emotion within them. Going back to the dominance between the two in positioning, Lennon being more dominant in the frame will give him more significance to the viewer, suggesting that he is more important than McCartney, but the contact between the two allows Lennon to pass over some of that dominance to McCartney, as if Lennon is making it clear that McCartney is significant to him and therefore should be significant to us.

This shot is of the celebrities Cara Delevinge and Pharrell Williams, this being for a magazine shoot. Once again, Bailey has used the power of positioning and composition to create a power play between two people. Delevinge being placed in front of Williams, covering his whole body, leaving only his face and arm exposed. Delevinge is even holding Williams' face, establishing and even more powerful presence. Typically in the world, men are seen to be the more powerful characters rather than the women, however, in this photo, Develinge is given the presence of a powerful woman, overpowering a man in the photo. Williams is almost seen to be worshipping Delevinge by him being held by her. They both have an expression of pride and comfort for each other, this equalling out their dominance in the photo. The two are very close to each other, thus forming a relationship for the viewer; this further supported by the clear comfortable expressions on both. Furthermore, the two celebrities are wearing the same clothing, this matching in style further supports a personal relationship between the two, this also equalling out their dominance again because by wearing the same clothing it suggests they see each other as equals together.

This shot is of the brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher. Here the positioning is equal, both are stood at the same level next to each other, neither are doing something different to the other. This equality gives them both an equal but very powerful dominance in the photo, their backs are pressed together, this suggesting a relationship and union between the two; this putting their dominance together to create something dramatic in the atmosphere of the photo. The brothers also looking very similar in appearance to each other gives the viewer the idea that these men are very similar to each other overall, once again furthering this equality. However, for a viewer that knows the history between these two brothers, the equality will become rather ironic. The Gallagher brothers were in the same band Oasis, where they performed iconic music for a long period of time, but eventually, the band split up which came to a shock to many followers of the band, since it seemed a spontaneous decision. After a while, it had come out that the brothers do not speak to each other or really have any relationship at all, and the issues they have between each other is what caused the band to split up. From various interviews and exposure, it seems the rivalry between the two is strong and there is no way of having whatever issue they have resolved. I cannot find when this photo shot by Bailey was taken, but say if this was taken before the rivalry begun, you could say that this photo becomes a piece of nostalgia, where it presents what once was. Furthermore, if you go the other way and suggest this was taken after the rivalry began, you could say that Bailey wished to present that even though these two do not like each other, that they are still brothers, and that is what makes them equal to each other.

This shot is once again of the celebrities Cara Delevinge and Pharrell Williams. Bailey uses positioning again to create a more dominant subject within this shot; that being Delevinge. Delevinge is sat at a much higher level than where Williams is sat, allowing more of Delevinge to be in shot and only Williams' torso. Compared to the previous photo of the two, Delevinge is less dominant in this photo because before, Williams' body was covered, but now that their bodies are next to each other in comparison, you can see that Delevinge is a lot smaller in size compared to Williams; this making her appear weaker in comparison to the previous photo. Here the relationship between the two appears more disconnected than before. In the previous photo, the two had expressions of amusement and pride while they were rather close to each other, in this photo, the two appear more serious rather than amused as if they are trying to show the viewer that they are people to take seriously; they are also not as close as before. This photo appears more formal than personal and that removes some of the connection between the two, weakening the relationship. Granted they still appear as a couple, but a less joyful one, more of a power couple. Like before they are wearing the same clothing, thus creating a union between the two and telling the viewer that they should be seen as equal with each other.

Overall…

I feel Bailey's style when it comes to two people/couple portraiture is an experimentation of power and union between the two subjects. The variety of positioning and composition that can be used to present a couple as one is wide and Bailey has shown just some of those, and he has inspired me to further experiment that. Although isn't distinct for couple portraiture, I feel his general style when it comes to portraiture immensely inspiring and professional, and so I will follow that style for my work. In my further shoots, I will go on with the inspiration to experiment with composition and the presentation of unity.

Photographer Research - Nastia Cloutier-Ignatiev

Nastia Cloutier-Ignatiev

Nastia Cloutier-Ignatiev is a 19-year-old portrait, fashion and beauty photographer based in Montreal. Her work is high quality modelling and is not afraid to be explicit with her work. She depicts people as sultry and intimate to the camera while other bizarre things could be surrounding them. Cloutier-Ignatiev goes for an alternative and intense approach, wanting the viewer to be almost shocked with what they are witnessing but also charmed by it.
"People say that I am the kind of photographer who gets fascinated by faces and bodies; that it’s as if lips and eyes dictated the way I capture the instant. That behind my aesthetic style, I am all about getting the most out of a simple situation." - Cloutier-Ignatiev
I felt Ignatiev's style, especially in this portfolio titled 'Love', was an intimate and strong method in presenting passion and love between two people, and potentially a useful style to incorporate in my personal portfolio.

Photo One
The boy- Boris @boris.leblanc The other boy- Yan Etchevary @yan.etch by Nastia Coutier-Ignatiev @nastia.jpg.jpg
This piece was shot by the photographer Nastia Cloutier-Ignatiev, it is of two people’s mouths close together, almost as if they are kissing, but their mouths are parted and overlapping each other. Ignatiev is using close-up photography but not wide-angle or else that would distort too much of the appearance of the mouths. She has used a light studio setting and macro quality when it comes to detailing on the models’ faces/mouths. The use of lighting and editing used has created a distinctive sample of colours, where the pink in the lips is harsh yet subtle at the same time. Judging by there being facial hair on one of the mouths and lack there of on the other, this photo is presenting a male and female in an intimate state. There is a tension presented in this photo due to the closeness, the women’s nose is pressed up against the man’s philtrum, which you can see slightly lifting his upper lip, and the pressure even lifting the woman’s lip slightly. Even though they are touching it seems incomplete because their lips are not pressed together, and the woman’s teeth are grazed on the man’s lower lip. The photos motion seems heavy as if the movement between these two is frantic. The closeness between the two suggests a comfort with each other and a history, making a photo appear personal.

This piece is shot by the photographer Nastia Cloutier-Ignatiev, the piece is of two people close-up, and the female's lips are pressed up to the male's neck and her tongue against his skin. Once again, Ignatiev has used a close-up composition and bright studio setting for the lighting. The high definition creates a grain to the photo when perceiving the stubble on the male's neck and the taste buds on the woman's tongue; this high definition could be to emphasise and convey the passion between these two people. Both people lack identity due to their full faces not being revealed, the man not even having any facial features revealed removes almost all of his identity, the full focus now being left on the woman's mouth against his neck. The woman's tongue dragging against the man's neck suggests sensuality and conveys a strong intimate expressions given to the man. A viewer could feel uncomfortable when viewing this photo because the photo appears so personal, as if the viewer shouldn't be viewing this, it is just for the two people involved. But that is what makes it so much more special, the fact that these two people are willing to let people see how much they love each other and how comfortable they are with each other, they wish to flaunt that almost.

Photo Three
The girl- Karo Vadnais @karo_vadnais The other Girl- Karine St-Michel @karinestmichel by Nastia Coutier-Ignatiev @nastia.jpg-3.jpg
This shot is a close-up of two presumably women's faces pressed together and one women's thumb inside the others mouth. Ignatiev's use of lighting creates a high definition on the ladies skin and the creases in their lips, creating a intense appearance. The colouring of this photos makes the ladies lips a vibrant pink but they fit subtly with the rest of the photo. You can assume these are both woman from the fact that neither have facial hair and both of their lips are feminine and shaped like a typical woman's; the skin also appears fragile rather than rough like a typical man's. When looking at this photo it is almost like you can hear them breathing, their mouths being parted open suggests breath, the way they are parted also suggests something sensual about this situation. The woman's thumb pressed into the other woman's mouth conveys a desire to silence her, to keep her quiet from her breaths; most probably caused by the other woman with her thumb in the other's mouth. This also very intimate action could show the comfort between these two, strong enough to have confidence in doing such an action to each other; this comfort and confidence expressing their love for each other.

Photo Four
The girl- Aïcha @the.mixed.mess The boy- Anthony @the.chvmp1on by Nastia Coutier-Ignatiev @nastia.jpg-2.jpg
This shot is a close-up of two people, male and female, with the woman biting and tugging on the man's lower lip with her teeth. The high definition, macro lens quality, captures and reveals every little detail on their skin, having them appear grainy and static in some areas. The man's lower lip is a saturated pink with warm undertones that give a sense of warmth and comfort for the viewer and the photo overall; both people's skin tones also being warm and even creates a calming atmosphere. This calming atmosphere is strong since it can make such a harsh appearing action, biting a lip, still feel calm and steady. The action of biting the man's lip appears aggressive in sexual aspects, like this woman has a desire to express her attraction towards this man, and she has the confidence to do this is such a daring and explicit way. There is a slight lift on the woman's upper lip in the corner, suggesting a snarling action from her, this emphasising the aggression and intensity. Once again, the comfort and confidence within this woman conveys her love for this man, this being Ignatiev's intention I feel.

Overall…

I feel Ignatiev's style and method of presenting two people's love for each other is vivid and daring. The explicitly within her work truly grabs the attention of the viewer and leaves them with an odd feeling, but still brings the message across that these people in this photo love each other, no matter any other factor. The high definition quality is eye-catching and pleasing to the eye, with warm tones and the vivid pinks from the models' lips presenting a purity even with the mouths being sensual. I think this method will be useful to experiment with for my personal project and even worthy of being placed into the final portfolio. I have always enjoyed the daring style some photographers use and think this particular one would be perfect in expressing my love for my partner.

Proposal

My personal investigation is to create a documentary styled portfolio of youthful/millennial culture. I will present the aspect of romance/intimacy of this current youth in this documentary by exploring the romance of my own personal relationship.

Background

When it comes to photography I personally own a passion for portraiture and ennui photos. Photographers such as Victoria Siemer, Duane Michals, Billy Kidd, Edward Honaker, and many similar artists present cynical and bleak pieces. I find photos that have forlorn and dark compositions to be enticing because they own a mystery and always seem to have a twist in their message, the photos not only make you think, but they make you want to think.

While pursuing the romantic aspect of the youth, I plan to record/document my personal relationship with my partner to create authentic documentation. With this, I will focus on the defining features of our relationship and create a story of how we love each other. The documentary will appear as a personal tribute that I create for him. I will capture certain moments of us spending time together, and potentially present juxtaposition of moments in our relationship. I wish to do this with my personal investigation because I enjoy the documentary style of photography and gained inspiration for exploring romance from a photo by Duane Michals that I analyse further down. I plan to focus on the purity of relationships and how innocent they can be at times, as opposed to Michals' photo which had a darker presentation to it. I hope to truly present all my passions into one investigation, my passion for portraiture, documentary, and most importantly my relationship; I intend for this final outcome to reveal a lot of passion.

Photographer Research/Illustrations

Duane Michals
Image result for duane michals this photograph is my proof
This piece is shot by Duane Michals, the shot is of a man and a woman sat on a bed and the woman is embracing the man from behind. This shot is framed with a thick white border and on this border is writing. The writing at the top states 'THIS PHOTOGRAPH IS MY PROOF', suggesting whoever wrote this needed this photo for evidence for something; the writing being at the top and capitalised makes it appear almost like the title of the photo, explaining what the photo stands for. The writing below states 'This photograph is my proof. There was that afternoon, when things were still good between us, and she embraced me, and we were so happy it had happened. She did love me. Look, see for yourself!'. From this short piece of writing, we can infer that the writer is the man in the photo, shown by 'she embraced me', which is presented in the photo. Before reading this piece, the photo looks simply like a sweet couple together in a room, a family portrait to hang on the wall, but after reading, the photo becomes sad and nostalgic. This is from the man saying 'when things were still good between us', and 'she did love me'. When I first saw this photo, it was the original inspiration for this personal investigation; the presentation of an unfortunate romance I saw as inspiring to create a lighter version of this photo, with a pure representation. The use of writing allows whoever writing to tell the viewer what they want them to see, and I think this could appear interesting in my personal investigation.

Edward Honaker
Image result for edward honaker
This piece is shot by Edward Honaker, the shot is of a man (Honaker himself) with his body rested on a chest of drawers, and not far from his head is a glass vase of a wilted flower; the photo is in black and white. You are only able to see the man's torso, concealing his identity from the viewer by having his back to the camera. The detailing of the man's spine and ribs creates a frail presentation on the man, having him appear weaker to the viewer, and suggests he is defenseless. Honaker's photos are representations of his personal depression and anxiety issues, further creating the impression of weakness and struggle in this photo. What caught my attention in this photo for my personal investigation is the wilted flowers. Flowers, typically roses are associated with romance, and the dead flowers in this photo I believed added an aspect of romance to the photo, as if the man feels lonely and desires others, but fails to satiate this. With my personal investigation, I will be presenting a purer aspect of romance compared to this, but it helps me to better understand connotations I could create in my pieces.

Billy Kidd
5687_Shot_04_078.jpg
This piece is shot by Billy Kidd, the shot is of a group of young, model-esc people, sitting around in the corner of a studio apartment. Every person is dressed in intriguing clothing and convey an attitude lacking in care of how they are perceived. This specific portfolio Kidd has created I had interest in since I believe it presents youth culture in an accurate light. The atmosphere in the photo feels calm and almost lifeless, these people appear empty; which in this current youth is seen as desirable by most, to look beautiful and be unphased by everything. Kidd's presentation of causality in this photo I see as what is desired by the youth, but not what they truly are, creating an internal conflict for many, this conflict I think may be useful to present in my personal investigation slightly.

Victoria Siemer
This piece is created by Victoria Siemer, the piece is a polaroid framed photo of an empty bed with an Apple Mac notification over it. The notification is titled 'He broke your heart unexpectedly.'. The use of an Apple notification can suggest a modern and youthful presentation of emotional expression since this generation seems to express everything online and appear technology dependent. The empty bed and notification title suggests loneliness and heartbreak, with the connotation of having to sleep alone and the denotation that this person's heart has been broken. Like said before, my personal investigation is going to present a pure version of romance, so forlorn composition won't be used in my work, but understanding the opposing side of my work will help me to better understand what will present my side. Siemer's work is a good presentation of youthful romance in an unfortunate way.

Techniques

I am not entirely sure of all the techniques I plan to explore since the work I am planning to present I don't to be heavy edited, I want authenticity with the photos in this work. Black and white will be something I definitely explore and practice further, while also perfecting edits such as dodge and burn technique. I enjoy shallow depths of field in work so I plan to explore that setting in my work. I will also look into an editing style similar to Duane Michals' involving text since my style is documentary, but find a way to give it my own personal twist. Anything else I plan to look into in the future I will make clear in my work.

Blur and Camera Controls

Definition & Theory

ApertureThe aperture adjusts the size of the opening through which light passes to the image sensor.

Shutter Speed - Shutter speed means timing and duration of opening and closing of the shutter curtain at the back of the camera. A fast shutter speed will freeze action while slower shutter speed creates a blurring effect. Measured in fractions of a second.

ISO - Measures the sensitivity of the lens sensor to light. The higher the ISO, the more sensitive the lens is to light.

William Klein
Image result for william klein
This shot from Klein is of two children, one of these children aggressively pointing a gun towards the camera, the other child appearing calm. The focal point on the camera is set to the children, leaving the gun in blur but it is still clear to see what the child is grasping. The child holding the gun appears distressed and defensive, as if he feels threatened by the camera and is protecting himself. The other child appears calm but you can see he is attempting to look at the other boy and has his hand on him. This could be him trying to calm down the other boy and tell him there is nothing to feel threatened by. Both boys are in tracksuits and appear rather dirty on their faces; this suggests these boys have been raised in poor conditions and aren't wealthy in any sense. From this we can infer that the boys' poor upbringing has lead them to behaviour poorly and be in a potential gang of some sorts, where they can now have guns and defend themselves. This sort of defence on such a young child suggests vulnerability, the emphasis of aggression on the boy with a gun suggests he is over compensating and truly feels threatened or he feels the need to prove he is a man. The effect of blur on the gun allows the viewer to focus on the boy and see his vulnerability clearer, it tells the viewer that they shouldn't focus on the gun and more the problem at heart.

Image result for william klein
This shot from Klein is of a woman in a crowd of people blurred and looking in a certain direction. The face of the woman appears to be serious and focused, as if she is looking for someone. She is looking past the camera suggesting that the camera was in her way, and so she moved to the side, suggested by the motion blur, to get a better look behind the camera. Further support that she is looking for someone is by the look in her eyes, though it us blurred, you can sense a slight panic within her, as if she has lost someone, maybe her child and is desperate to find them. The crowd of people behind the woman suggests that they are in a busy area, maybe a shopping centre in the street, or a parade, this creates a sense of sound and commotion.

Personal Photos
These are my personal creations of blur photos. I used a tripod to capture myself around my house and used self-timer to quickly get into place.

For the four photos above the camera settings were aperture F22 and shutter speed 6 seconds, this was to make sure the camera captured for enough time to capture me moving up the stairs; the aperture was so low because the shutter speed was at such a long time, so it made sure the camera did not pick up too much light while capturing. The photos I feel could present people living in a hurry, constantly having to move up and down to get stuff down, and the fact that they are blurred in the photo suggests they are in a rush.

This photo's settings were aperture F22, and shutter speed at 6 seconds.
This photo's settings were aperture F16, and shutter speed 3 seconds. These two photos have different settings because I wanted to see if a shorter shutter speed would make any difference to the appearance of a spinning chair and person. The aperture obviously had to change with the shutter speed or the photo could end up either over or under exposed. It appears as though the 3 second difference did not make much difference except the 3 second shutter speed photo appears to present a less solid figure of me when spinning in the chair, this would be because the camera had less time to capture as much as the 6-second shutter speed did. I feel these photos could symbolise boredom. Since I am sat at my desk in my bedroom, the spinning of the chair is typically a child-like act and this could present that I am bored in my room and am doing child-like things in hopes to entertain myself.

This photo's settings were aperture F14, and shutter speed 4 seconds. I feel this photo could represent student struggle. As it captures that I am sat at my desk on my laptop and it appearing as though I am doing work on there, while also my head is in a blur. The blur could represent mental struggle as I am working.

Progression

I believe for my personal project coming up this technique would not suit my intentions. The technique typically is used for more symbolic and darker aesthetic photos, which mine will not have that aesthetic. However, though I will not be using this technique, I find it to be a very intriguing one that I could potentially use in another project for the future.

Slow Sync Flash

Definition & Theory

Shutter speed means timing and duration of opening and closing of the shutter curtain at the back of the camera. A fast shutter speed will freeze action while slower speed creates blurring effect. Slow sync flash is using your flash with a slow shutter speed. It helps you keep your subject sharp while capturing motion or a dark background.

Image Bank

Original Photos
Image result for photography snoot
All the photos presented here were taken on a Nikon D300S, aperture at F8, shutter speed at 2secs, and exposure at ISO1600. I used a halogen bulb set with a snoot, facing the subject so their figure is the only thing within the line of light. No clicker is necessary for this shoot so I simply would have the subject still while I made sure they were in focus, then taking the picture and have the subject perform a movement within the 2 seconds for the camera to capture.

This photo was to present the subject with wings from her moving her arms while the shutter speed time went by. The warm colour that presents the subject's arms creates a sense of comfort and fragility, further creating a angelic sense. At possibly a longer shutter speed this would've been more visible since more light on the arms would've been captured.

These two photos were presenting a subject dancing with the Union Jack flag, this photo could be presenting a cultural representation and pride from the subject. Once again, if the shutter speed was longer, it would've captured more movement making the photo better in quality. In the future I will work on this technique and post it onto this blog.

Multiple Flash

Definition & Theory

Multiple exposure is a photography technique of combining two or numerous separate exposures into one, with the manipulation of time and lighting.
With the old film cameras, the process of taking double or multiple exposures was very simple, which was taking the next exposure without rewinding the film. Multiple exposure can also be created with simple photo manipulation, by blending two image layers together.

Image Bank

Original Photos
Image result for photography softbox
All the photos presented here were taken on a Nikon D300S on a tripod, the aperture set at F20, shutter speed at 6sec, and exposure at ISO200. I used a soft box facing the subject and a flash clicker to manually flash the soft box light onto the subject while the camera captured for 6 seconds while on a tripod. Every time the subject made a new pose, I would click the flash on so the camera could capture this pose.

For this photo, my inspiration was from a photo in my image bank, where a woman's arms are spread in different areas while her body is still. The presentation of this photo conveys an oriental appearance, in reference to Hinduism and the God Ganesha, who has multiple arms spread around him presented in many illustrations.

For this photo, I wanted to present a sense of movement and enjoyment within the person; as if partying. The smile on the subject's face suggests a pleasure being felt from her and the fact she is looking down in every shot of her, suggests she concentrated and taken away by the feeling she is experiencing, a sense of bliss, or in this case, ignorance being bliss.

For this photo, I wanted to present a more frantic expression of fun, hence a repeated shots of the subjecting dancing; this is inspired by a photo in my image bank, of a woman dancing in a sequence of photos. The frantic blur suggests a certain speed and movement from the subject that is spontaneous, the expression captured by the flash at points presents the subject smiling and clearly enjoying her movement, this presenting the fun from someone I wanted to present.

Contextual and Critical Analysis

Definitions

Connotation - An idea or feeling associated or interpreted from a denotation.

Denotation - The literal or primary meaning of something e.g. an action, a word.

Punctum -  A distinct feature that draws attention from the viewer most compared to everything else.

Studium - A Latin word meaning 'study'. A studium indicates historical, cultural, and or social meanings in a photo. It is also a first impression for a photo before deeper analysis.

Mendal Grossman

This fine art piece is shot by the well renowned photographer Mendal Grossman, it is of two children, one dressed in tattered clothes, the other behind the boy and dressed in what appears to be a uniform, with a symbol strapped to his arm. Their surroundings appear industrial, similar to factories, with a long chimney pipe stretched out at the far back behind the children; there also being fencing to border off the buildings, suggesting they are restricted, further supporting the idea that they in an industrial area. Mendal pursued his passion by capturing Jews out on the streets (’slums’) and eventually the ghetto once he had to move with his whole family in a small flat in the ghetto. He had many projects, one being a charity portfolio on poor Jewish children on the streets, this photo potentially presenting that. But his final project that he kept pursuing till he died in a death march, was to record the life and tragedy in the ghetto during the holocaust. Mendal would present the suffering that people possessed in the ghetto, so this photo appears to be out of the ordinary with his work due to the smile on the child in uniform’s face and the simplicity of the photo; with no misery in sight at first glance.
For this photo, the studium is simply children role playing with authority figures, suggested by the child in uniform holding the child in poor clothing, and holding a bat to his arm; a pure game to children. In the ghettos, there were Jewish Police Forces who were elite Jews who agreed to police their communities in exchange for privileges. So, this photo’s original purity is now tainted by the power of authority; in order for families to be comfortable or even safe, people had to have jobs of authority, once again leaving restriction. Nonetheless, the children's intentions and minds are still pure, the child in uniform could've borrowed his father's armband and clothing for such roleplay. The distinct feature in this photo (punctum) is the smile of the child in the uniform, there is a sense of brazen and pride within his grin, suggesting he is shameless and proud to have this authority over other children; showing satisfaction with power. The poor child’s expression appears empty, as though this has happened before and he feels nothing from it anymore, suggesting this child could be troublesome and therefore he is told off by the authorities a lot.
Mendal took his photos out on the streets in secrecy since having such a possession and documenting the tragedies around was not allowed in ghetto rules and punishable by death. He would wear a large coat and have the camera underneath it strapped to his neck. There would be a slight parting in his coat in which the camera lens could peak through and capture Mendal’s surroundings. There’d be holes cut into his pockets so he could adjust and direct the camera so he could capture at any moment under his coat to be unseen by Nazis. This was Mendal’s only way to capture his photos and it worked very well; Mendal was never caught out with his camera. To capture the photo above with this method must’ve been quick in timing, it appears the boy in uniform is aware of the camera in Mendal’s coat and smiles almost to acknowledge whoever views the photo that he knew. The composition almost appears deliberate as if Mendal had these boys pose this way for the photo specifically and quickly captured it before it appeared suspicious to anyone.

Fine Art Vs Commercial Photography

Fine Artcreative art, especially visual art whose products are to be appreciated primarily or solely for their imaginative, aesthetic, or intellectual content.

Commercial Photography - Commercial photography means taking photos for commercial use, meaning for business, sales, money, etc. Commercial photography is often associated with advertisements, sales pitches, brochures, product placements as well as merchandising.
