Multiple Flash

Definition & Theory

Multiple exposure is a photography technique of combining two or numerous separate exposures into one, with the manipulation of time and lighting.
With the old film cameras, the process of taking double or multiple exposures was very simple, which was taking the next exposure without rewinding the film. Multiple exposure can also be created with simple photo manipulation, by blending two image layers together.

All the photos presented here were taken on a Nikon D300S on a tripod, the aperture set at F20, shutter speed at 6sec, and exposure at ISO200. I used a soft box facing the subject and a flash clicker to manually flash the soft box light onto the subject while the camera captured for 6 seconds while on a tripod. Every time the subject made a new pose, I would click the flash on so the camera could capture this pose.

For this photo, my inspiration was from a photo in my image bank, where a woman's arms are spread in different areas while her body is still. The presentation of this photo conveys an oriental appearance, in reference to Hinduism and the God Ganesha, who has multiple arms spread around him presented in many illustrations.

For this photo, I wanted to present a sense of movement and enjoyment within the person; as if partying. The smile on the subject's face suggests a pleasure being felt from her and the fact she is looking down in every shot of her, suggests she concentrated and taken away by the feeling she is experiencing, a sense of bliss, or in this case, ignorance being bliss.

For this photo, I wanted to present a more frantic expression of fun, hence a repeated shots of the subjecting dancing; this is inspired by a photo in my image bank, of a woman dancing in a sequence of photos. The frantic blur suggests a certain speed and movement from the subject that is spontaneous, the expression captured by the flash at points presents the subject smiling and clearly enjoying her movement, this presenting the fun from someone I wanted to present.
